Exploring Altered States of Consciousness Talk- London, Brighton & Bristol

Is it possible to experience altered states of consciousness? And if so, what are the pros and con's and reaching 'non-rational' states? Join Jez Hughes, a practitioner of shamanism with decades of experience, for a fascinating talk on the topic.

In traditional indigenous societies shamanic trance states are often seen as the bedrock of a healthy life, society and culture. In the modern western world, such altered states of consciousness are seen at best as entertaining distractions or, worst they are viewed as pathological and dangerous. Yet the human drive to experience such non-rational states has never gone away and it could be argued is rising all the time.

In this talk, we will explore how such states of consciousness are reached in shamanic societies, what their purpose is, and the potential dangers and pitfalls of working in this way. We will also explore how modern society could benefit from consciously engaging with the different realms of reality that are accessed through trance states. How this might satisfy our desire to find a meaning and purpose that is often so lacking in modern life. And finally, how it could help us face up to the ecological crisis we are facing in modern times.
